News Americas, LONDON, England, Weds. Aug. 9, 2017: The Caribbean region’s medal count at the IAAF World Championships in London upticked to four Tuesday after a silver medal win in the 400-meters men’s finals.

Twenty-one-year-old Steven Gardiner of The Bahamas claimed silver in the race to increase the region’s medal total by one so far.

Silver took second in 44.41 ahead of the fast-finishing Abdalelah Haroun of Qatar who claimed bronze in a season’s best of 44.48. Wayde van Niekerk, 25, of South Africa, grabbed the gold in a time of 43.98.

Gardiner had won his semis in a time of 43.89, the fastest of that round.

Meanwhile, Jamaica and Cuba are the only other Caribbean nations to medal to date. Jamaica has two medals so far while Cuba has one as of August 8, 2017.

Meanwhile, Latin America’s total is also three – two for Venezuela and one for Colombia to date.
