News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. July 26, 213: Grenada’s heritage took over part of Brooklyn, NY on July 21st as the 5th annual Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique Day was celebrated.
“The Island of Spice” illustrated they have plenty flavor as attendees donned their national colors. They all came together for a complete family event, as grandparents, parents and children showed their Grenadian pride as they all converged at St. Andrews Park on Atlantic Ave between Kingston Avenue and Herkimer Street in Brooklyn.
Food, fun and cultural entertainment were the order of the day. Oil down seemed to be the favorite, because every food vendor I went to was sold out. So I had to settle for the coco, callaloo and saltfish with some sweet potato pone for desert. But it was yummy!
Calypso, soca, reggae, steelband blared as models wearing flag colored costumes paraded on stage, and children danced. Folk singing, and culture display filled the day from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Politicians also gravitated to the park, as Councilman Jumaane Williams, the first Grenadian-American elected to political office in New York, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, and even Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell made an appearance and gave speeches.
