News Americas, BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Mon. July 25, 2011: The Chairman of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM, wants the transit of radioactive material through the Caribbean Sea to halt immediately.

Dr. Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, says the practice is “unacceptable and injurious.”

The call to halt the transit of the waste through the Caribbean Sea has come in the wake of a new shipment of Vitrified High Level Waste that will leave the United Kingdom, this week, for Japan through the Caribbean.

Douglas said the transit of such waste compromises the Caribbean’s rich but fragile ecosystem, and puts at risk “the very existence of the People of the Caribbean of the region.”
