News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Dec. 21, 2018: A Caribbean immigrant will spend Christmas locked up in the Vernon C. Bain Center in the Bronx, NY after being accused of murdering his daughter as well as his niece with whom he allegedly fathered a child.
Abdool Zaman, who was born in Guyana and lived in Orlando, Florida, is now facing two counts of second-degree murder. He is set to appear in a Queens, NY court on January 25, 2019.
The 5’9”, 39-year-old man is accused of killing Vanessa Zaman, 18, along with her cousin Leona Samlall, also 18, last Thursday at the Oakmeade Apartments in Highland Springs, Virginia before fleeing to New York City.
Henrico County, Virginia police now want Zaman extradited back to the state to face the murder charges.
Zaman was reportedly absent from his daughter’s life for most of it, but the Amityville High school graduate decided to pursue a relationship with him after she turned 18.
Samlall, meanwhile, had been living with Abdool Zaman in Orlando, Fla., when Vanessa Zaman moved in with them. The two women were cousins because Samlall’s mother married Abdool Zaman’s brother.
But despite that relationship, Abdool Zaman is reported to have fathered a baby with his niece.
But after she moved to Orlando, she became worried about Samlall’s safety and so she convinced to take the baby and join her to stay with Samlall’s mother and stepfather in an apartment in Highland Springs. They arrived there about a week before they were shot. The slayings unfolded last Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, in the 200 block of Airport Place, one block from the apartment.
Police are working to confirm that the child’s parents in fact were Samlall and Abdool Zaman.
