Guyana, Barbados To Clash In CPL T20 Finals
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket tourney’s finals is this weekend already. The Guyana Amazon Warriors will face-off against the Barbados Trident tomorrow, Oct. 12th at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Trinidad.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors became the first time to finish a Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season with a perfect record of 11 wins from 11 matches.
Barbados on Thursday night delivered a crushing blow to the Trinbago Knight Riders, pulling off a 12-run victory to book their spot in the finals. The Tridents scored 160 for 6 and then bowled out the Knight Riders for 148 all out.
Jamaican Gymnast For Tokyo Olympics In ‘Disbelief”
“Disbelief” is how Jamaican gymnast Danusia Francis says she feels in wake of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“I still don’t know that it’s sunk in yet or that it will sink in when I am out there in Tokyo wearing the Jamaican flag; and yeah, extreme pride. I am so proud of myself, and happiness,” she told Sports Max.
Francis competed together with two other members of Jamaica’s women’s team at the 2019 World Championships in Germany and qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games having finished ninth among the top 20 athletes who were not on a qualifying team. She scored 13.5 in the vault, 12.35 on the uneven bars event and 12.566 in both the balance beam and the floor exercise events.
Former West Indies Cricketer Roger Harper Returns To The Scene
Former West Indies coach, Guyana-born Roger Harper, has been named as a member of a new four-man panel of West Indies cricket selectors expected to begin duties next month.
The 56-year-old former spinner will be joined by former Windwards batsmen Mile Bascome and Lockhart Sebastien alongside Barbadian Hendy Wallace, according to the Trinidad Guardian. Harper managed the West Indies team between 2000 and 2003 and later became the manager of the West Indies Youth team in 2005.
Caribbean Roots Tennis Star Named Most Marketable Athlete
Japanese born, Haitian roots tennis star, Naomi Osaka has been named as the most marketable athlete of the year. The Japanese player, who is one of the ten highest-paid athletes as per Forbes, reacted by saying: “For me, I don’t really think too much about that. I let my agent sort of decide. … I just do what I’ve been doing for, like, 21 years, which is play tennis. That’s the main thing for me. That’s the thing that I’ve done every day of my life and what gives me the most joy.”
Jamaican Wins At RallyCross Championship
Jamaican Fraser McConnell made history on Sunday, Oct. 6th by securing the ARX2 Championship title after a compelling day at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
McConnell won despite a broken suspension on Saturday but went on to win the event outright in wet and slippery conditions.
“Right now, it still has not sunken in fully yet. … It was probably the slipperiest conditions I have ever driven in, other than that, the season went well. This track [Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course] is where I got my first-ever rallycross win and I think it’s only fitting it’s also where I got my championship win.”
