News Americas, CARACAS, Venezuela, Tues. July 5, 2011: President Hugo Chavez is back in Venezuela days after announcing he has cancer and as the country marks its 200th anniversary of independence from Spain.

Chavez made a surprise return to the South American nation from Cubaa on Monday and insisted he would win his health battle.
Speaking from the balcony of the Miraflores presidential palace, Chavez said: “The return has begun. This is the best medicine for whatever illness.”

But he said he will not attend the celebrations in person.

Venezuelans are marking the day with street parties across the country and a military parade in Caracas.

Venezuela became independent on July 5, 1811.
