News Americas, HARTFORD, CT, Mon. Aug. 10, 2015: A popular West Indian club in Connecticut has been slapped with fines for labor violations.

The West Indian Social Club, which had its roots in the basement and homes of the first West Indians to set foot in Hartford, was cited for the violations by Hartford police.

Cops along with the Health Division, the State Liquor Control division and the Labor Department, made unannounced inspections to the establishment on Main Street, Albany Avenue and Allyn St. late last week.

The West Indian Social Club, at 3340 Main St., was cited for labor violations and will pay fines of $1,000 per day to stay open until the issue is resolved.

The Club has helped to make the West Indian presence in Hartford valued and well respected but the club has had issues as recently as late last year. A man was shot in the chest at the West Indian Social Club in Hartford early Monday morning.

Police said a gunman fired several shots inside the club located at 3340 Main St. around 1 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2014. The male victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital for serious injuries but survived the injuries.
