News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Fri. Mar. 22, 2019: It’s no April Fool’s joke. A former Caribbean prime minister headlines a list of notable persons set to be honored by US Caribbean Diaspora organization, Team Jamaica Bickle, (TJB), this April 1st in Kingston, Jamaica.

Team Jamaica Bickle, founded by Jamaican and American immigrant advocate Irwine Clare, Sr., O.D., turns 25 years this year and has spent the last two plus decades catering to the basic needs of Jamaican and Caribbean athletes at the Penn Relays.

Jamaica first female Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, O.N., M.P., will be presented with the TJB Chairman’s Award, according to the organization’s founder, on April 1st from 6:30 p.m. at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

Simpson Miller first became Jamaica’s seventh Prime Minister in March 2006 and served through September 2007. Simpson Miller was elected to the office again in January 2012 and served until March 2016. In 2012, as Prime Minister of Jamaica, she became the first foreign head of state to visit TJB at the Penn Relays.

TJB began in 1994 as a small group at the annual relays, and has since expanded to include serving Caribbean athletes from a number of other nations, including Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana.

Also set to be honored at the TJB’s 25th anniversary reception is Grace Group CEO, Don Wehby, who will be presented with the TJB Corporate Award.

Other honorees will include President of the International Sports Sciences Association, Dr. Walton Small; former Sportscaster and (now), Special Advisor, Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport, Ali McNab; Sports Analyst and former athlete, Trishana McGowan and immigration attorney Sekou Clarke.

The event is being presented under the patronage of Jamaica’s Governor General, Sir Patrick under the theme: “Celebrating Volunteerism, Heralding Excellence.”
