News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Aug. 10, 2018: Two of the Caribbean’s top cricketers are set to be presented with honorary doctoral degrees by the University of the West Indies (The UWI) this fall.
Top Guyana-born, former West Indies captain and cricketer, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, will be presented the Doctorate of Law for his achievements in the sport of cricket at the St Augustine Campus.
Meanwhile, former Windies fast bowler, Michael Anthony Holding from Jamaica will also receive the Doctorate of Law for his achievements in the sport of cricket.
Chanderpaul made his international debut at the age of 19 and went on to captain the West Indies in 14 Tests and 16 One Day Internationals. A left-handed batsman, Chanderpaul is well known for his unorthodox batting stance, which has been described as crab-like. He has scored 20,000 runs in international cricket, and in 2008 he was named as one of the five Cricketers of the Year by the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack and awarded Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year) by the International Cricket Council.
Due to poor performances, Chanderpaul was dropped from the West Indies squad in 2015. After that, he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2016, without a farewell, at the age of 41.
Holding was of the fastest bowlers to have ever played Test cricket, he was nicknamed “Whispering Death” due to his quiet approach to the bowling crease. He was part of the fearsome West Indian pace battery, together with Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Sylvester Clarke, Colin Croft, Wayne Daniel and the late Malcolm Marshall that devastated batting line-ups throughout the world in the seventies and early eighties.
Early in his Test career, in 1976, Holding broke the record for best bowling figures in a Test match by a West Indies bowler, 14 wickets for 149 runs (14/149). The record still stands.
Their degrees which have been approved by the University Council, will be conferred at The UWI’s 2018 graduation ceremonies in October and presented by Chancellor Robert Bermudez.
The schedule of graduation ceremonies begins October 13th at the Open Campus in Saint Lucia, and continues on October 20th at the Cave Hill Campus, October 25th-27th at the St Augustine Campus and November 2-3 at the Mona Campus.
