caribbean festNews Americas-Philadelphia, PA , August 14, 2017: The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation’s (DRWC) Great Plaza will be transformed this Sunday into many islands showcasing authentic island sounds of reggae, roots international beat, soca, hip-hop, cool jazz, gospel and creative dances complimented by a market place of Caribbean Fashions and Exotic Cuisine.

A culturally rich celebration of 14 Caribbean Islands promises to treat you to a wholesome family fun day on the Great Plaza, Penn’s Landing, at Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, on Sunday, August 20, 2017 from noon until 8 p.m.

Now in its 31st year, this free festival of Caribbean culture, music, and food is one of the celebration of the many festivals in the PECO Multicultural Series and part of the 2017 summer season at Penn’s Landing, presented by PECO.

At press time, the festival’s inclusive entertainment line-up will feature Gwo Koze (Haitian Kompa/Zook), Kenny Sykes (Jazz), Image Band (internationally known from Washington, D.C.) Faith & Favor Gospel Band, CBC Youth Dance, MaddZart (Soca) Poetica Bey and David Watkis (Spoken Words), Panchan (Latin Reggae/Soca), Idu (Reggae), Jonas Jeannot (Haitian Comedian), Josh Deniison (Christian Comedian). MC will be DJ Scripture (WKDU 91.7 FM).

As always, the event will also feature the ever-popular steel drum band, Philly PanStars, along with a Caribbean Culture booth – Tings Caribbean – where one can feel, touch and sample “Tings” from the islands. A Caribbean Children’s Village – “Pickney Kannah” with story telling, face painting and beadmaking among other events.

This Festival, presented by PECO Multicultural Series and the Caribbean Festival & Cultural Committee, now its 31st year, works to publicize the importance of the islands and the cultural contributions of the Caribbean Community to the Philadelphia region and beyond. Most importantly, the event raises scholarship funds for college students of Caribbean descent. This year’s Scholarship recipients are: Lanesa Cumberbatch, Gabrielle Farrell, Jennine Lee, Linton Taylor, Jenisha Stapleton,Cristina Artis, Kamise Smith, Stephanie McKee and Ashley T. Borneo.
