Post Sandy Effects Continue To Be Felt

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Nov. 16, 2012: The effects from Hurricane Sandy continues to be felt by thousands in New York with some still without heat and power. President Obama toured the area by air and on foot in New Dorp, Staten Island today, where he saw first hand, the devastation and gave hugs to a lucky few. He also met with Mr. & Mrs. Moore, whose two young sons were swept away in the storm.

The President, who toured Queens via helicopter with NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, insisted he is committed to the rebuilding of the city for the long term.

As some New Yorkers struggle to survive, the American Red Cross continues to provide food, shelter, relief supplies and comfort to the many people in the Greater New York Region still struggling even as power is restored and some communities begin to recover.

Shelters remain open for people unable to return home, and Tuesday night about 2,700 people stayed in 20 shelters.

The extensive Red Cross feeding operation in partnership with the Southern Baptist Convention continues, with kitchens and fixed feeding sites spread across New York and New Jersey. To date, 5.6 million meals and snacks have been served.

Red Cross volunteers are also driving through neighborhoods to hand out water, food and relief supplies in more than 300 Red Cross feeding trucks mobilized as well as rental cars, trucks and other vehicles. Meanwhile, as of Tuesday, November 13, the Tide Loads of Hope mobile laundry program, working with the American Red Cross, brought its free laundry services to Island Park, New York to provide clean clothes to New York area residents and relief workers who are in need of resources and support following the damage caused by superstorm Sandy and the nor’easter.

This as Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams, working alongside local community groups, continue to provide medical and mental health care to Hurricane Sandy-affected communities in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, as well as Hoboken, New Jersey. The vast majority of the patients treated by MSF in the shelters and underserved communities have been elderly, homeless, or physically or mentally impaired.
