News Americas, SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Weds. Nov. 4, 2011: The people of Puerto Rico will get to decide next summer whether they want to have statehood, independence or stay as a territory of the U.S.

Puerto Rico’s Governor, Luis Fortuno, made the disclosure in a surprise televised address Tuesday. He said voters will get to decide on Aug. 11, 2012 whether they want a change in status to decide the long-debated political future of the U.S. territory once and for all.

Puerto Ricans have previously voted on the issue in 1967, 1993 and 1998, choosing all three times to keep the status quo.
