News Americas, QUITO, Ecuador, Weds. June 29, 2011: Six police officers in Ecuador have been found guilty of crimes against the security of the state.

They include the former head of security for Ecuador’s congress, Colonel Rolando Tapia. They were found guilty of attacking President Rafael Correa during a protest last September.

The police were angry about plans to cut their bonuses and the president was forcibly detained. He had to be rescued by the military after being tear-gassed and held for several hours in a hospital.

The police chief resigned in the wake of the uprising, and was replaced the next day.

The six men will be sentenced later.
