Hurricane destruction in the USVI.

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Sept. 22, 2017: It’s may look like it’s just US Virgin Islands-born former NBA star Tim Duncan who is stepping up to help his native land, but another VI-born sports star is also pitching in as the islands suffered another devastating blow from Hurricane Maria.

Former Kansas basketball forward Milt Newton and his wife, Shalaun, have established a fund to assist hurricane relief efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Newton, current assistant general manager of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, was born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and served as co-captain of the U.S. Virgin Islands team in the 1987 Pan American Games.

Milt and Shalaun Newton are requesting donations at their Emerald Gems Foundation Website at https://www.emeraldgemsfoundation.com/articles/help-with-us-virgin-islands-hurricane-irma-relief-efforts/

“Our friends and loved ones describe St. Thomas, once lush and beautiful, as having the appearance of a Third World country.  While that may be true, the hearts of our people despite their dire situation, continue to be one of beauty and of strong resilience and courage,” the Newtons wrote on their website.

Tim Duncan’s foundation has already raised over USD 2 million to help through his 21 US Virgin Island Relief Fund.
