News Americas, QUITO, Ecuador, Mon. Nov. 10, 2014: Trinidad and Tobago’s women’s soccer squad clashed with their Ecuadorian counterparts in Quito Saturday and managed to hold out to a draw in the first leg of intercontinental playoff for a place in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup (FWWC).
In a tightly-contested encounter before some 15,000 fans in Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, The Soca Princesses had a goal disallowed in second-half stoppage time after German referee Bibiana Steinhaus ruled that goalkeeper Shirley Berruz Aguilar was fouled by forward Kennya Cordner as the pair went for a ball in the box.
Earlier in the half, the South Americans had a chance to take the lead, but Andrea Pesantez blazed just over the crossbar from distance.
The second leg of the match will be played on December 2 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.
The Soca Princesses are bidding to become the first team from the Caribbean to qualify for a FWWC. The two teams were playing for one of the final two spots in the Women’s World Cup in Canada next summer.
