News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Tues. Feb. 7, 2017: During the U.S. Presidential campaign, some Haitian voters broke ranks with the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton in favor of then candidate Donald Trump. On Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, Trump, now the US’ 45th President, signaled he had not forgotten the loyalty of those Haitians For Trump.

The President on Monday announced a presidential delegation to the Republic of Haiti. The four-member delegation announced by Trump will attend the inauguration of Haiti’s President-elect, Jovenel Moïse, today, February 7, 2017, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Thomas A. Shannon, Jr., Under Secretary for Political Affairs in the U.S. Department of State, will lead the delegation. The three other members of the Presidential delegation includes: Peter F. Mulrean, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Haiti, U.S. Department of State; Omarosa O. Manigault, Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison, The White House and Kenneth Merten, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs and Haiti Special Coordinator, former United States Ambassador to the Republic of Haiti, U.S. Department of State.

It is the first official Presidential delegation announced to any Caribbean nation since Trump took office.

The new Haitian President will be sworn in after a year-and-a-half of political crisis.

Moïse’s election is almost as controversial as Trump. The Haitian businessman set to take the reins of power today remains at the center of a government money-laundering probe. Moïse has said he foresees forging a personal bond with Trump.

President Trump and I are entrepreneurs, and all an entrepreneur wants is results,” Moïse said in an interview last week with the Reuters news agency. “And therefore I hope we’ll put everything in place to make sure we deliver for our peoples.”
