News Americas, LOS ANGELES, CA, Mon. Mar. 3, 2014: Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o gave “12 Years a Slave” a win at the Oscar’s last night, picking up the win for best supporting actress.
Nyong’o, 31, won for her performance in “12 Years a Slave” at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday night.
“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is because of so much pain in someone else’s,” Nyong’o said, paying tribute to her character, Patsey, a slave in 1840′ Louisiana.
Nyong’o’s won over Jennifer Lawrence for her role as a loopy housewife in “American Hustle.”
Meanwhile, John Ridley also gave the movie its second Oscar, winning for Best Adapted Screenplay while the movie took home the top honor of the night, winning Best Picture.

Other winners Sunday night included Jared Leto, who won best supporting actor for his role as a transgender woman in “Dallas Buyers Club,” the tale of Nordic princesses, “Frozen,” won best animated film, a first for Disney Animation Studios since the category was introduced in 2002 and the 3-D spectacle ‘‘Gravity,’’ which amassed a force of technical awards.
“Let It Go,” Frozen’s main song, also won the award for original song while the Best documentary went to the crowd-pleasing backup singer ode ‘‘20 Feet From Stardom’’ and Italy’s ‘‘The Great Beauty’’ won the Oscar for best foreign language film.
Other winners included ‘‘The Great Gatsby’’ for best costume design, and best makeup and hairstyling for the low-budget ‘‘Dallas Buyers Club.’’
