News Americas, LOS ANGELES, CA, Weds. Jan. 25, 2017: A Caribbean-roots actress is among the Oscar nominees for the 89th Annual Academy Awards, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The nominations announced by the Academy Tuesday show British-born actress Naomie Melanie Harris, whose roots extend to the Caribbean, is among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.
Harris, 40, whose dad was born in Trinidad and Tobago and mother in Jamaica, was nominated for her role in the hit movie ‘Moonlight.’
The Oscars are the final and biggest award show of the season, culminating in a massive display of all the glitz and glamour we’ve come to associate with Hollywood.
Harris, OBE, started her career as a child actress, appearing on the children television series Simon and the Witch in 1987. She played voodoo witch Tia Dalma in the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean films, Selena in 28 Days Later, and Winnie Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Eve Moneypenny in the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre.
In 2016, she starred as Paula, the emotionally abusive mother of Chiron (Alex Hibbert), a shy and withdrawn child in the critically acclaimed film Moonlight. The performance has also earned her nominations for the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and now the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
