News Americas, HOUSTON, Texas, Sun. June 14, 2026: For at least the first half on Sunday, tiny Curaçao had the football world believing. Making its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, the Caribbean underdog stunned powerhouse Germany when Livano Comenencia’s deflected strike beat legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, leveling the score and sending thousands of Curaçao supporters into celebration.
The goal – the first in Curaçao’s World Cup history – was a moment decades in the making for the island nation of just over 150,000 people that was making its debut in the World Cup. For a brief moment, the Blue Wave stood toe-to-toe with four-time world champions Germany on football’s biggest stage and looked like it would overrun the German bigwigs.
Germany, however, eventually demonstrated why it remains one of the tournament favorites, scoring six unanswered goals to secure a 7-1 victory and begin its quest for a fifth World Cup title.

But while the final score will show a convincing German win, many Curaçao supporters will remember something else entirely: the goal that announced their nation to the world. Comenencia’s equalizer canceled out Felix Nmecha’s opener and sparked jubilant scenes among an estimated 6,000 Curaçao fans in Houston. It was a historic breakthrough for a nation making its World Cup debut and a powerful statement about the growth of Caribbean football on the global stage.
Germany responded through Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz (twice), Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav to restore order and cruise to victory. Yet even in defeat, Curaçao left its mark.

The Caribbean side played with determination and pride throughout its historic debut, earning praise from commentators who noted that the Blue Boys “played their heart out.”
For Curaçao, the journey is far from over. The island nation still has group-stage matches ahead against Ecuador and Ivory Coast, carrying with it the confidence that comes from scoring one of the most memorable goals of the tournament’s opening weekend.
The final score favored Germany but the moment belonged to Curaçao. Curaçao next faces the Ivory Coast on June 25th at 4 p.m. in Philadelphia.
