News Americas, LONDON, England, Tues. May 5, 2015: A 44-year-old nurse born in Trinidad has shot to fame as one of two senior midwives who assisted in the delivery of the second baby born to Royals Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.
Trinidad newspaper Newsday identify Arona Ahmed formerly Mohammed of Point D’or La Brea, as one of two midwives who helped in the birth of Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge on Saturday.
“We’ve named her Charlotte, despite the Wife’s mother insisting that Davina was a perfectly suitable alternative. #RoyalBaby,” Prince William tweeted. All hail HRH Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of the United Kingdom! Now raise a glass and get drunk! #Charlotte #PrincessCharlotte.”
Kate Middleton tweeted. The baby is the second for William and Kate. Ahmed is reportedly the daughter of Kenneth and Ena Mohammed. It is the second royal birth that she has assisted in.
Ahmed was also part of the team that delivered Prince George at St Mary’s Hospital, West London two years ago. Ahmed migrated to England when she was just 17 to study nursing. She began her career at the North Middlesex Hospital in Central London and worked her way up to senior midwife, according to Newsday.
She is married with two children.
According to the Daily Mail, the Duchess had a meticulous birth plan and had opted to be seen first by the midwives. So while the male doctors waited in a nearby room, it was the red-uniformed midwives -Ahmed and her boss, Jacqui Dunkley-Bent, Professor of midwifery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, who monitored the Duchess of Cambridge as her contractions progressed and supported Prince William.
