News Americas, BROOKLYN, NY, Tues. Sept. 8, 2015: A Caribbean-born lawyer in New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration is fighting for his life after being hit by an apparent stray bullet at the annual J’Ouvert Festival early Monday morning.
Carey Gabay, a Jamaican-born Harvard-graduate who is a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation and former assistant counsel to Cuomo, was is at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn according to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Gabay according to the NYPD was shot at about 3:40 a.m. on Bedford Avenue between Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street while attending a pre-parade party. The J’Ouvert festivities.
Gabay “worked his way up from the projects” in the Bronx according to Governor Cuomo.
“He is the classic American Dream story,” Cuomo told the New York Daily News.
Gabay, 43, went to Harvard for his undergrad degree and then also graduated from Harvard Law School. He previously worked at the law firm Jones Day from 2007 to 2009 and Schulte Roth & Zabel from 2002 to 2007, according to the governor’s office.
Carey and Trenelle Gabay, his wife who was born in Trinidad, live in Brooklyn.
Gabay was one of four people injured at the J’Ouvert Festival which is unrelated to the West Indian American Day Carnival Association.
