News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Weds. July 12, 2017: Eight convicts remain on the lam after a prison riot and fire that razed the Guyana prison on Camp Street in Georgetown Sunday.

Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels confirmed yesterday, July 11th, the total number of prisoners who escaped in the midst of the commotion Sunday. He said there were originally nine but one of the inmates – Shamudeen Mohamed – was recaptured Monday night at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.

Among the wanted are Stafrei Hopkenson Alexander, Uree Varswyke aka Malcolm Gordon and Mark Royden Durant aka Royden Williams C/D “Smallie.” All are wanted by the police for murder and escaping from lawful custody

The Guyana police is urging anyone with information to contact the nearest police station.

Prison warden, Odinga Wickham succumbed to gunshot wounds following the attack.

The disclosure comes as Guyana’s Ministry of Social Cohesion urged all Guyanese to remain united and calm.

The Camp Street prison had been detaining 1,018 prisoners.  Sixteen months ago, 17 prisoners died at the same facility following a fire there as well.
