News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Tues. Aug. 29, 2017: A tennis pro whose roots extend to the South American CARICOM nation of Guyana yesterday advanced at this year’s US Open.
Sachia Vickery, 22, who was born in South Florida but whose mother Paula Liverpool, is from Guyana, advanced to the Round of 64 at this year’s US Open, after defeating Russian Natalia Konstantinovna Vikhlyantseva Monday.
Vickery, who stands at just 5′ 4″, rebounded after losing the first set 4-6, to win 6-4, 6-1.
She will next face another Russian, Sofia Kenin, tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30) as she continue her great run at the Open.
This is the second time Vickery is playing in the Main Draw of the US Open.
Vickery has been ranked as high as world number 108 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), having achieved that mark in July 2015. As of March 2017, she is ranked 134th in the world in singles.
Vickery has won two singles tournaments on the WTA’s lower-level International Tennis Federation circuit and one doubles tournament on this circuit.
In 2015 she told the Guyana Chronicle: “Guyana is where my whole family is from and I consider myself mostly Guyanese though I was born in America. I feel like it’s my home.”
