News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Feb. 14, 2018: As challenges on the detention and deportation of Haitians from the Dominican Republic continue to make the news, there was definitely a moment of “unity” at New York Fashion Week this week between the two countries.
A 26-year-old Haitian-born model made her stunning return to New York Fashion Week after her 2017 debut, walking on Monday, Feb. 12th in the show of the late son of the Dominican Republic – Oscar de la Renta.
Jacmel, Haiti-born Aube Jolicoeur was among the models to walk the catwalk at the showing for the late Santo Domingo-born de la Renta. Jolicoeur strutted her stuff in a floral de la Renta dress that was complimented by red heels.
According to an interview with Vogue, Jolicoeur has been on a roll, since her 2017 debut, racking up work with industry legends like Steven Meisel, Fabien Baron, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.
“Being a little girl from a third world country and coming to America, I never would have guessed that I would have the pleasure of working with such [talented people],” she was quoted as saying between shows. “Not in a million years!”
Jolicoeur was raised near the famous Bassin Bleu in Jacmel, but her family moved to the US when she was nine years old and settled in Kentucky.
She moved to New York at 20 and went on to book several seasons with Yeezy and subsequently landed on the radar of casting directors. She hopes now to achieve enough success and fame to help “the poor and eventually start my own charity to help end poverty and homelessness,” according to Vogue.
De la Renta died in Kent, Connecticut in 2014. He became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy. An award-winning designer, he worked for Lanvin and Balmain. His eponymous fashion house remains one of the most famous super-brands and has flagship boutiques around the world including Harrods of London and Madison Avenue, New York.
