News Americas, LOS ANGELES, CA, Tues. Nov. 18, 2014: Jamaican singer Anita Antoinette may be pigeonholed into the reggae genre by her coach Gwen Stefanie but The Voice singer is managing to land on the iTunes Top 100 chart.
Antoinette, of the NBC music reality show, last night landed at #75 on the chart after her rendition of the reggae anthem “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley
Antoinette cover somewhat temporarily erased last season’s Voice winner, Tessanne Chin’s cover of the same song, enough to score her a spot on the chart but it was no chart topper. Still the singer delivered a solid performance to close the show.
Antoinette, who moved to the U.S. at age 8 from Kingston, Jamaica, has yet to move her fellow Jamaicans in the way Chin did last year, creating a social media frenzy.
Perhaps it’s because she was a no name singer before making it into on to the show following a second audition; she has no label behind her; she is not based in Jamaica and in fact, hardly sounds Jamaican.
But there’s no denying the talent. Since making the show, her covers have consistently landed on the iTunes chart and the fact that she made The Voice Top 12 via fan votes last week proves she has developed an active fan base.
Tonight, Antoinette’s likability will be determined by the votes she receives and will prove whether she can advance one more week – this time into The Voice Top 10.
It will be tough, especially since her competition at this stage is extraordinary, with Matt McAndrew, Craig Wayne Boyd, Damien Lawson, Chris Jamison and Luke Wade all giving standout performances last night.
