News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Nov. 8, 2017: Voters in New York’s 40th and 45th City Council districts on Tuesday handed their incumbent Caribbean roots representatives return tickets to the body.

Haitian-born City Councilman Mathieu Eugene beat off Jamaican roots challenger Brian Cunningham by 58 percent of the votes to 38 percent in a heated race.

Cunningham, a former aide to New York State Senator Kevin Parker, accused Eugene and his team of illegal campaigning on Election Day to which Eugene snapped back on Twitter: “It is unfortunate that my opponent is accusing me of illegal campaign practices, while he himself has gone to several polling sites.”

Grenadian-American Jumaane Williams easily beat back challenger Anthony Beckford by a massive margin of 96-4.

Williams posted a selfie with his team on Twitter and thanked voters in the 45th District “for coming out strong!”

Eugene has been in the City Council for 10 years while Williams has been there for 8 years. During his decade in office, Eugene passed seven bills compared to Williams’ 41.
