News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Mar. 9, 2018: A Caribbean country is sending over 150 athletes to a sporting event next month.
According to Garth Gayle, General Secretary of the Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association, the country will send 151 athletes in 15 disciplines to next month’s Commonwealth Games.
The Games are being held on Australia’s Gold Coast from April 4-15 and Gayle said he expects them, especially the track and field athletes to do well.
Track and field will have the largest contingent comprising of 70 athletes led by veterans Yohan Blake and 2006 200-metre champion Sherone Simpson. Among the women are Shericka Jackson, Chrisann Gordon, Natasha Morrison, Christania Williams, Yanique Thompson and Stephenie-Ann McPherson.
Tiffany James and Simone Facey complete the female track and field selections.
Blake leads a contingent that includes 2014 200m champion Rasheed Dwyer, Julian Forte, Oshane Bailey, Nigel Ellis, Demish Gaye, Peter Matthews, Hansle Parchment, Jaheel Hyde, Dejour Russell, Federick Dacres, Traves Smikle, and Warren Weir among others.
In addition to the 70-member track team, Jamaica is also sending a five-member badminton team, 12-member netball and rugby sevens teams, one-member boxing and cycling teams, as well as two-member shooting, squash, aquatics, table tennis, and triathlon teams.
Jamaica will also for the first time send a wrestling team and a lawn bowls team to the Games.
