Trinidad-born umpire, Clyde ‘Cumbo’ Cumberbatch, who officiated in 12 crickets tests and 26 ODIs from 1981 to 1997, died aged 81, in Port-of-Spain on Dec. 29, 2017.
After bidding adieu to his umpiring career, Cumberbatch served as chairman of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association’s Training and Examination Committee for 12 years before stepping down from the post in June this year.
Subsequently, he was also honored with an honorary life membership on the committee.
Funeral Service for Cumberbatch is set for today, Friday, Dec. 5th, at the All Saints Church, Marli Street, Newtown, Port-of-Spain from 10 a.m.
Meanwhile, the he sporting fraternity in Grenada is also mourning the death of former national footballer Lincoln Bain. Bain passed away on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2017. He was 65.
Bain of Fontenoy, St George represented Grenada in football in the 70’s and also played club cricket for the village of Fontenoy. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Indian Teen To Train At Usain Bolt’s Club
A 16-year-old boy from the slums of Delhi has been picked to be trained at the running club of triple Olympian Usain Bolt. Nisar Ahmed, who is the son of a rickshaw puller and currently lives in a 10 by 10 feet shack, has been picked to train at the Racers Track Club in Kingston, Jamaica, after showing talent as an up-and-coming young athlete. Nisar started his athletics career at school, and slowly and steadily he went on to win many national and school championships.
Recently, he rewrote the Under-16 national record in the 100 metres after clocking a timing of 10.85 seconds at the 33rd National Junior Athletics Championships in November 2017. His breakout performance came at the Delhi State Athletics meet in September where the sprinter clocked 11 seconds on the final day to bag the 100-m gold.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Drop Gayle
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have not retained Windies star batsman Chris Gayle for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The left-hander will now head to the auction block for the January 27th IPL draft in Bangalore. Gayle failed to spark during the Windies tour of New Zealand, but was afflicted by illness at the start of the tour.
West Indies Coach Calls For Hard Work After Crushing Series Defeat
West Indies coach Stuart Law says there needs to be a lot of hard work, planning and understanding following a disastrous tour of New Zealand that ended with a crushing T20 defeat at Bay Oval on Wednesday.
A record 119-run thrashing at the hands of the hosts brought the curtain down on a miserable tour of the Pacific, which saw the team lose seven straight games.
The Windies lost two Test matches, followed by three ODIs and two T20s.
“We need to do a lot of hard work, planning and understanding. That means some soul-searching by looking in the mirror and asking if we gave it everything to change a game, get into a game and win a game,” Law said.
