News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Jan. 5, 2018: A GoFundMe account started to help return the bodies of five Jamaicans killed in a Bronx, NY fire for burial in their native land, has raised over US 21,000 of their US 100,000 goal to date.
As of late yesterday, a News Americas check revealed that the account set up by Andrene Paul for the victims’ family, had raised US $21,130 from over 500 people over five days.
Most of the donations so far have been small, between $5 and $50 with the largest being $400. To donate log on here.
Karen Stewart-Francis, along with her two daughters, 2-year old Kylie and 7-year old Keleisha, and niece, 19-year old Shawntay Young, were all killed in a tragic fire that occurred on December 28th in a four-story building at the corner of East Tremont Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue in the Bronx.
Seven other people were killed and 23 injured in the fire, which was reportedly started by a 3-year-old child in an apartment. More than 200 firefighters battled the 7-alarm blaze in bitter cold temperatures, and icicles lined the power lines between the four-story building and the hoses used to douse the flames. It was the deadliest fire in New York City in more than 25 years.
