Dr. Riyad Insanally, Guyana’s new ambassador to the U.S.

 News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Fri. April 8, 2016: The Guyana APNU-AFC government of David Granger has named a new ambassador to the U.S.

He is Dr. Riyad Insanally has been the OAS Representative in Trinidad and Tobago since April 2008.  Dr. Insanally will replace Ambassador Bayney Karran who has served as Guyana’s ambassador to the U.S. since 2003.

Karran has been appointed as Guyana’s ambassador to China.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Insanally was an Adviser to the OAS Assistant Secretary General in Washington, DC. Before joining the OAS in September 2006, Dr. Insanally represented Guyana’s sugar interests in Europe (2004-2006), serving concurrently as Senior Trade Adviser at the Guyana High Commission in London and Commercial Representative of the Guyana Sugar Corporation. He was Political Adviser to the first two Secretaries General of the Association of Caribbean States (1997-2003), in Port of Spain, and served as a Senior Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana (1990-1997), specializing in multilateral diplomacy and regional integration issues. He was also a lecturer in Spanish at the University of Guyana from 1981 to 1984.

Insanally studied Modern Languages and Latin American Studies and holds the MA and MPhil degrees from Fitzwilliam College in the University of Cambridge and a PhD from Harvard University. He is married and has two children.
