News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Oct. 26, 2018: A Caribbean-born, dancehall artist and US reality TV star is putting the spotlight on the controversial issue of skin lightening and black-on-black racism.

Jamaican dancehall singer and Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star, Spice, tackled the issue head-on in a new music video released this week, titled, ‘Black Hypocrisy.’

The singer, born Grace Latoya Hamilton, reveals that she struggled with self-image growing up due to her complexion and urge others in the song to be confident in their skin, no matter the shade.

“I had a dream that Black women will start supporting each other rather than bashing each other …. I’m black without apology,” proclaims the artist as the music video begins, as she decried the prevalence of anti-black beauty standards within black communities.

“Was told I would reach further if the color of my skin was lighter,” Spice sings. “Cause society say brown girls prettier. … I’m black and beautiful, I know I’m pretty. I get hate from my own race, yes that’s a fact, cause the same black people, they say I’m too black.”

Skin bleaching is a multi-billion-dollar industry, with many black women around the world believing that lighter skin will lead to upward mobility and overall success. The conversation around the demand for skin bleaching products sprung up once again late last year when German-owned skincare brand Nivea put up billboards across several West African countries that promised “visibly lighter skin” to those who used their products.
