News Americas, MIAMI, FL, Fri. Aug. 17, 2018: Fellow Leo, Chris Cuomo, spent two nights last week during his ‘Closing Argument’ segment on ‘Cuomo Prime Time,’ speaking to the strength of immigration and diversity in America and sharing his own family’s immigrant story.
He, like many, also highlighted the hypocrisy of Donald Trump’s call to end “chain migration” as Trump’s in-laws became naturalized US citizens under the same program. Melania Trump sponsored them for their green cards after she became a naturalized U.S. citizen herself based on the family unification section of the US immigration law.
But while Cuomo is right to insist that America is greater because of immigrants and most Americans have an immigrant past, what he missed or choose to overlook, is that Trump and his right-wing cohorts like Stephen Miller and Laura Ingraham are pushing to end immigration because of people like Melania Trump’s parents.
The only reason they are attacking immigration is because of the color of the new wave of immigrants. It is why they want to end legal immigration through family reunification; it is why they want to build a wall at the US’ Southern border; it is what they feel no remorse in putting brown children in cages; it is why they have no issue with deporting the brown parents of these young children and then leaving the kids abandoned; it is why they are limiting H-1B and skilled immigrant visas; it is why they feel no qualms about scapegoating immigrants; rounding them up and deporting them simple infractions and why they continue to claim immigrants commit more crimes than Americans. It is why so many feel they are doing the “right thing” by calling the police on immigrants and blacks or attacking them because of how they look.
Ingraham herself revealed this in her dog whistle diatribe last week on the racist network.
The color of these immigrants’ matter; not just immigration. If more of them looked like Melania Trump’s parents or came from Norway, it would be a non-issue.
Despite the attempt to now walk back those remarks, Ingraham was very passionate as she said exactly what the Trump base feels.
“In some parts of the country, it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn’t exist anymore,” she said. “Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people and they’re changes that none of us ever voted for and most of us don’t like. From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically in some ways the country has changed. Now, much of this is related to both illegal and in some cases, legal immigration that, of course, progressives love.”
Little wonder that former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke tweeted support of the show as it speaks to the heart of the White nationalist agenda – that America is becoming too “dark” and the root cause is brown and black immigrants. So the solution is to get them out.
It is largely why Donald Trump was elected – to wink, wink: “Make America Great Again,” aka “Make America White Again.”
But America was never White but brown, so it’s really come full circle. And yes, Chris Cuomo is right in telling the likes of Ingraham get out of the country if they don’t like where it has come since it really is not “their country” but the country of Native Americans and immigrants.
Sadly, for Ingraham, Miller and Trump et al, unlike most immigrants and blacks who can “go back where they come from,” they have no where to go to, as Europe sure does not want them.
